For imaging systems.
- Application of the imaging system.
- Range of object distances.
- Field of View (FOV).
- Weight/volume constraints.
- Resolution (pairs of lines per mm) at the main object distance in the center of the image.
- Depth of Field or resolutions at different object distances in the centers of the images.
- Allowed geometrical distortion.
- Spectral range.
- A full CMOS datasheet will be very helpful. Number and sizes of pixels. Graph of Chief Ray Angle (CRA) versus image height. Thickness of cover glass and the name of its material. The distance between the cover glass and the sensitive surface. I can decide for myself which CMOS to use.
For illuminating systems.
- Spectral ranges.

White balance and Color Rendering Index (CRI).
- A full datasheets of LEDs will be very helpful. Graphs of angular emittance of the LEDs. Graphs of spectral emittance of the LEDs. Dimensions of emitting surfaces. I can decide for myself which LEDs to use.
- Object distance.
- Requirements to the homogeneity of flux on the object plane.
- How much light should fall on object plane in lux.
- Efficiency of the illuminating system.
